Just before IFA 2024 kicks off, Samsung introduced the first entry into the Galaxy Book 5 series and it is a thin, light, AI-focused laptop with a beautiful OLED display, all-day battery life and Intel’s new processors. Yes, Intel. Maybe the Book 5 series will get a Snapdragon version down the road, but today it’s all about the Series 2 Intel Core Ultra processors. They bring 47 TOPS of NPU power, qualifying them for the Copilot+ PC brand.
The Samsung Galaxy Book 5 Pro 360 is a
convertible laptop with a 16” OLED touchscreen with S Pen support. The hinge
allows the screen to rotate 360°, turning this into a Windows tablet. Speaking
of, the screen is a 2,880 x 1,800px panel with 120Hz refresh rate and an
anti-reflective coating. An S Pen is included in the standard retail package,
by the way.
The laptop is light for a 16-incher,
weighing 1.69kg and measuring 12.8mm thick (0.5”). This is with a
fairly large 76Wh battery, which charges using a 65W USB-C adapter. The battery
should last up to 25 hours of video playback. And you’ll be enjoying the Dolby
Atmos sound of the quad speaker system the entire time too (2x 5W woofers, 2x
3.3W tweeters). Right now there seems to be only one version and it uses the
Intel Core Ultra 7 256V with Intel Arc 140V GPU (8GB). The GPU promises a 17%
performance uplift compared to Intel’s previous effort. There is 16GB of
LPDDR5X RAM (soldered) and you get to choose between 512GB and 1TB NVMe SSD
(this one should be user-accessible, but there’s only one slot).
The Galaxy Book 5 Pro 360 is equipped with
great connectivity options. There’s an HDMI 2.1 port (up to 8K @ 60fps or 5K @
120fps), two Thunderbolt 4 ports, one USB-A 3.2 and a headphone/mic combo jack.
Wireless options include Wi-Fi 7 (be, 2x2) and Bluetooth 5.4. The laptop comes
with Windows 11 Home and a slew of AI features, including Circle to Search,
Chat Assist, Live Translate and Transcript Assist. Samsung advertises “more
than 300 AI-accelerated experiences across 100+ creativity, productivity,
gaming and entertainment apps”.
The Samsung Galaxy Book 5 Pro 360 can be
pre-ordered today and will be available later this month in the US, Canada, the
UK, France, Germany and other markets. The 512GB variant is £ 1,700 and the 1TB
version is £ 1,900 on Samsung UK.
