Google ‘Comet’

A new Google foldable phone, tentatively named ‘Comet,’ has surfaced, as per a report from 9to5google.com. In the latest update of the Google Pixel Buds app, which was released today, Google is preparing for its upcoming Pixel phone line-up for this fall. This line-up includes the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, codenamed Shiba and Husky. In addition to these known Pixel phones, there’s another device known as Comet.

Firstly, it’s unlikely that Comet is part of the Pixel 8 series because it doesn’t follow the pattern of using dog breed codenames. For instance, the Pixel Fold was initially codenamed ‘Passport’ but was later renamed ‘Felix’ to align with the Pixel 7 series.

It’s also worth noting that the Pixel 9 series is expected to use reptile-related codenames like Komodo and Caiman.  Digging deeper into the code of the Pixel Buds app, it appears that Comet is grouped with the Pixel Fold and is referred to as a ‘fold’ in the app. While the Pixel Fold is relatively new, it’s unclear whether Comet is an early preparation for the Pixel Fold 2 or a potential Pixel Flip to compete with Samsung’s foldable phones.

Since there’s little available information about Comet’s features, it’s likely that it won’t follow the usual yearly Pixel release pattern, judging by its codename, according to the report.
