Google Pixel Fold

The Pixel Tablet and Pixel 7a were joined today on stage at Google's I/O conference by the long-rumored, oft-leaked, recently teased Pixel Fold, the company's first foldable smartphone. It measures 139.7 x 79.5 x 12.1 mm when folded, and 139.7 x 158.7 x 5.8 mm when unfolded, weighing 283g. It's IPX8 rated for water resistance (not dust, though, bear that in mind). The external screen is a 5.8-inch 1080x2092 17.4:9 120 Hz OLED with Gorilla Glass Victus on top, and up to 1,200 nits HDR brightness and 1,550 nits peak brightness.

The inner screen is OLED, 7.6" diagonally, has 6:5 aspect ratio, 2208x1840 resolution, 120 Hz refresh rate, Ultra Thin Glass with protective plastic layer on top, up to 1,000 nits HDR brightness and 1,450 nits peak brightness. The hinge features "fluid friction across the full 180-degree range of motion to securely support different postures". The phone is powered by Google's Tensor G2 SoC with the Titan M2 security coprocessor. You get 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 256 or 512GB of UFS 3.1 storage.

There are three cameras on the rear: a 48 MP main with 1/2" sensor size, 0.8 μm pixel width, f/1.7 aperture, and OIS, a 10.8 MP ultrawide with 1/3" sensor size, 1.25 μm pixel width, and f/2.2 aperture, and a 10.8 MP 5x optical zoom telephoto with 1/3.1" sensor size, 1.22 μm pixel width, f/3.05 aperture, and support for Super Res Zoom up to 20x.

On the outer screen there's a 9.5 MP fixed focus camera with 1.22 μm pixel width and f/2.2 aperture, while the inner screen gets an 8 MP snapper, also with fixed focus, and 1.12 μm pixel width along with f/2.0 aperture. A fingerprint sensor is embedded in the power button, there's dual-SIM support but only one physical SIM slot (the second SIM has to be eSIM), stereo speakers, and a 4,821 mAh battery that supports Google's 30W USB-C charger with USB-PD 3.0, which is sold separately (there's no charger in the box). The phone runs Android 13 of course.

It's already up for pre-order in the US for US$ 1,799 in two colors - Porcelain and Obsidian, and it will become available sometime next month. If you pre-order, you will receive a free Pixel Watch. In the future, the Pixel Fold will also be sold through the Google Store in Germany, Japan, and the UK, but not any other countries where Google offers its other phones. It might still make it to other shores via third party retailers, however.
