vivo Y78+

vivo just unveiled the Y78+, a phone with a big screen, big battery and a small price. The new model will go on sale in China this Wednesday (April 26) with a base price of CNY 1,600 for the 8/128GB model (US$ 230/€ 210/₹ 19,000). There are also 8/256GB and 12/256GB models for CNY 1,800 and CNY 2,000, respectively. The main attraction on the vivo Y78 Plus is its screen – a 6.78” AMOLED panel with FHD+ resolution (20:9) that boasts 120Hz refresh rate and great color rendering with 100% DCI-P3 coverage (105% NTSC). It’s quite bright too, hitting 1,300 nits at maximum.

And it’s a curved display, similar to more premium offerings, plus there is a fingerprint reader under the display. The other highlight we mentioned is the battery, a 5,000mAh power cell that can be recharged at 44W. The USB-C port also handles headphone duties, but if you want to go wireless, the Bluetooth 5.1 modem can handle aptX HD/Adaptive and LDAC.

At this price, something has to give and we think that the chipset will be the biggest source of groans – it’s the Snapdragon 695. vivo wasn’t stingy with memory, you can have 8 or 12GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 128 or 256GB of UFS 2.2 storage (there’s no microSD slot), but the 695 is showing its age performance-wise. The Android 13 based OriginOS 3 can add up to 8GB of virtual memory.

That aside, you’re looking at a basic camera setup with a 50MP main sensor on the rear (f/1.8 lens with OIS), but is limited to 1080p video because of the chipset. It is joined by a 2MP depth sensor. On the front there is an 8MP selfie camera (f/2.0) that lives in a notch. The vivo Y78+ is available in Blue, Yellow and Black, all three colors have a slight gradient effect. And before you ask, no, there is no non-plus Y78, at least not yet.
