At the virtual PH media gathering hosted
by MediaTek earlier, the Taiwanese chipmaker confirmed that local mobile maker
Cherry Mobile will be coming up with a smartphone powered by a Dimensity 5G
SoC. MediaTek hasn't disclosed much info regarding what type of Dimensity SoC
solution is that and when will it officially launch yet. But, we suspect that
it could be a Dimensity 700 series chip since Cherry Mobile is known for making
very affordable devices. If ever, we won't be surprised if it will be a
Dimensity 720-powered smartphone.
As a quick recap, Dimensity 720 is a TSMC-built 7nm chip with
5G SA/NSA for affordable smartphones. It uses 2x ARM Cortex-A76 cores and 6c
Cortex A55 cores clocked at 2.0GHz. The chip is paired with the ARM Mali-G57
MC3 GPU and MediaTek APU for AI tasks. For
5G, the chip boasts a 2CC CA carrier aggregation, Voice over New Radio (VoNR),
5G and 4G dual SIM with dual standby. One thing is for sure, Cherry Mobile will
try to bring the MediaTek 5G experience to the masses. To recall, MediaTek is a
long time chip partner of Cherry Mobile.
