AMD is about to get real serious in the
high-end gaming laptop market. After making the smallest of splashes with last
year's Core i5-like Ryzen 7 3750H, the chipmaker will soon launch the 35 W
Ryzen 9 4900HS that is expected to outperform a 45 W Intel Core i9-9880H or
even the unlocked Core i9-9980HK. The Asus Zephyrus G14 will be the first
gaming laptop to ship with the anticipated Ryzen 9 4900HS, but official prices
have been a big mystery.
Now that we're moving closer to launch,
retailers like Best Buy have made landing pages for the Zephyrus G14. The first
configuration will come with the aforementioned Ryzen 9 CPU, a GeForce RTX 2060
Max-Q GPU, and a 1080p display packed in a narrow-bezel 14-inch form factor for US$ 1450 USD. When considering that most mid-range 15.6-inch gaming laptops with
RTX 2060 graphics are typically retailing for about US$ 1100, the US$ 1450 launch
price for a high-end 14-inch size is not outrageous especially for the CPU
performance you'll get.
