The retro console replica craze began with
Nintendo’s NES and SNES classic systems, and now Sony’s miniature PS1 is also
coming our way. These consoles have proven to be a money-maker for companies
and a big nostalgia hit for gamers who want to relive their 8- to 32-bit glory
days. Sadly though, Sega’s plans to join these other consoles with its own Mega
Drive Mini is now delayed.
Scheduled for release in Japan this year, Sega’s
retro console is now being delayed until 2019. The company announced this via
Twitter. Sega says that the delay will allow it to review the console’s design
and hardware. Interestingly, it’s also planning region-specific units. For
instance, the US will get the Sega Genesis, while Europe and Japan will get the
Sega Mega Drive. However, we don’t yet know what games will come pre-loaded on
the mini device.
In the meantime, you can always play your
PlayStation Classic when it arrives for Xmas. Or you can play your NES or SNES
mini. It seems like it won’t be long before we have mini versions of all of the
former consoles from yesteryear. Then they will have to think of something else
to sell us on our nostalgia.
