Panasonic has launched the GH5s, an even more
video-focused version of the popular and already video-friendly GH5. The new
camera comes with a bunch of changes, most of which are under the hood.
For starters, the GH5s has a new 12.5MP sensor with
10.2MP usable resolution. The extra pixels allow the camera to maintain its
diagonal field of view when switching between aspect ratios such as 4:3, 17:9,
16:9 and 3:2. More importantly, the new sensor is optimized for low light
sensitivity, a bit like the Sony A7S II, and now supports shooting up to ISO
51,200 without extended ISO. The autofocus also works in -5EV luminance.
The GH5s comes with a bunch of video specific
features. It can now record internally in Cinema 4K (4096x2160) at 60p in 4:2:0
8-bit or 30p in 4:2:2 10-bit, making it the only mirrorless camera to do so. It
comes pre-installed with HDR Hybrid Log Gamma and Panasonic V-LogL, time code
in and out sync, waveform monitor, vector scopes, and programmable zebra
patterns. For stills, the camera supports 14-bit RAW files. The rest of the
camera is more or less identical to the GH5.
The Panasonic GH5s is priced at US$ 2499 body-only and
will be available February 2.
