Lenovo has taken the wraps off its new Thunderbolt External Graphics Dock. Equipped with a
Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 graphics card sporting 4GB of GDDR5 MXM memory, to add
extra processing power to a laptop, desktop or mini PC. Lenovo claims the
external GPU supports WMR at 90Hz and recommends that the Thunderbolt Graphics
Dock be used with the IdeaPad 720S Ultrabook at the current time although other
systems running Windows might support the external graphic dock in the future.
The Thunderbolt External Graphics Dock is powered by
an 170W AC adapter and connects to your PC via a USB Type-C connection and
offers up to 65W of power for attached PCs. As explained the only certified
device at the current time is the Lenovo IdeaPad 720S and you can expect more
devices to be added in the very near future. For example at CES the external
graphic dock is also being demonstrated connected to a ThinkPad X1.
Measuring just 5.12 x 9.76 x 0.89 inches in size and
weighing roughly 1.5lbs the external graphics dock is much smaller than other
competing devices currently available on the market. The Lenovo graphics dock
is equipped with Gigabit Ethernet, 2 x USB 3.0 and 1 x USB 2.0 ports and
supports the ability to connect up to 3 displays using the HDMI 2.0 port or two
DisplayPort 1.3 ports. The Lenovo Thunderbolt 3 Graphics Dock is expected to be
made available later this month and will be priced at US$ 399.
