Skullcandy has stepped into the eco-conscious audio market with its new EcoBuds True Wireless earbuds. These earbuds prioritize sustainability, boasting 65% certified recycled plastics, 57% less heavy metals, and a 50% lower carbon footprint compared to competitors.
However, this eco-friendly approach comes
with a trade-off. To minimize environmental impact, Skullcandy ditched the
traditional charging case that typically accompanies wireless earbuds. These
lithium-ion battery packs contribute significantly to the environmental
footprint of such devices.
Despite the lack of a dedicated case, the
EcoBuds offer eight hours of playback on a single charge and can be recharged
using a smartphone, USB-C port, or any standard outlet. Staying true to its
budget-friendly reputation, Skullcandy prices the EcoBuds at a competitive US$ 40.
Currently available in a “Glacier” colorway (a mix of white and blue), it’s
unclear if more color options will be added in the future. Steps like these set
waypoints for other companies to follow and adopt strategies that will shape
the state of our market in due time. With major issues surrounding disposing of
electronics and tech waste, Skullcandy’s attempt comes as a refreshing change,
especially if their earbuds can deliver on the same fronts as other popular TWS
earbuds (which are nearly not as cheap either).
