Jio, the telecom giant, has unveiled the Jio Bharat Phone platform, aimed at realizing India’s ‘2G-MUKT BHARAT’ vision. This innovative platform enables over 250 million feature phone users to access the internet through their devices. The JioBharat platform utilizes the capabilities of both devices and networks to offer internet-enabled services on entry-level phones. This groundbreaking initiative opens up new possibilities for feature phone users to experience the benefits of digital connectivity.
In addition to Reliance Retail, renowned
phone brands, starting with Karbonn, are joining hands with Jio to adopt the
‘Jio Bharat platform’ and manufacture ‘Jio Bharat phones.’ This collaboration
aims to expand the availability of affordable internet-enabled phones across
the country.
Jio Bharat’s primary objective is to
empower every Indian with digital services, particularly those who cannot
afford smartphones. By providing internet access on feature phones, Jio Bharat
seeks to bridge the digital divide and uplift the lives and economic well-being
of millions of people.
Feature phone users have faced increasing
digital disempowerment due to the rising costs imposed by other telecom
operators. The minimum price for basic voice services, which previously cost
Rs. 99 for a 30-day period, has now doubled to Rs. 199. This exploitation
predominantly affects users who are unable to afford smartphones. In addition
to affordability challenges, feature phone users also face restrictions in
accessing digital services. Jio Bharat aims to alleviate these issues and
provide an opportunity for this underserved segment of the population to
experience the transformative power of technology.
The Jio Bharat Phone comes equipped with a
range of features, including UPI with Jio Pay, FM Radio, and a camera. It also
supports Jio Apps such as Jio Cinema and Jio Saavn. Jio will begin beta trials
of JioBharat phones for 1 million users from July 7, 2023. This aims to ensure
scalability and streamline the process of upgrading feature phone users. The
beta trial will cover 6,500 tehsils, enabling Jio to gather insights and cater
to feature phone users across different regions effectively.
Jio Bharat phones are priced at Rs. 999,
offering the lowest entry price for an internet-enabled phone, making it highly
accessible to users.
