First showcased back in 2018, LG’s rollable OLED TV missed its targeted 2019 launch, but starting today units are available in several major retail stores in South Korea for people to gawk at. You could even buy one, though only if you have KRW 100,000,000 – that’s around US$ 87,000 or € 74,000.
The LG Signature OLED R is unique in that
the 65” OLED display can roll up and completely disappear into its aluminum
base. This actually allows it to operate with several different screen sizes:
full view gives you all 65 inches, Line view exposes just the top part of the
screen and Zero view keeps the screen completely hidden.
This is so you can use the powerful sound
system with 4.2 channel speakers totaling 100W output power. You can connect to
it as a Bluetooth speaker and Zero view mode avoids running the OLED
unnecessarily. Line mode enables 5 views: Music, Clock, Frame, Mood and Home
Dashboard.
The LG Signature OLED R TV is manufactured
at the company’s Gumi TV plant in Gyeongbuk. There master craftsmen actually do
some of the work by hand as this is positioned as a luxury good. Danish textile
company Kvadrat provides the fabric that covers the speakers and is available
in Signature Black, Moon Gray, Topaz Blue and Toffee Brown. The base itself is
made out of aluminum and you can have it inscribed if you want.
If you buy the TV, LG will provide you
with 3 years of extended service, which includes sending technicians twice a
year to inspect the TV and ensure it’s in top shape. LG can also send its team
to help with the installation of the TV.
