Last year, Xiaomi released the Redmi 8
series which is an entry-level series with the budget Redmi 8A. These phones
are still fresh in the market and are selling like hotcakes especially in
India. However, Redmi already has it’s succeeding (Redmi 9) series in works. We
can expect that the will come with a better spec sheet while keeping the price
on the lower side.
Redmi’s plan for the new year is to chase
away more customers from Samsung, Huawei, and Co. in the lower price ranges.
With relatively simple Android smartphones, Redmi has been offering good
devices for little money for years. The Redmi 7, Redmi 8 and Co. devices appear
in regular smartphone campaigns. A very attractive strategy to attract more
people. The Redmi 9 could soon be available, as the first Redmi teasers
suggest.
According to Xiaomi VP and general manager
of Xiaomi India, Manu Kumar Jain, “Redmi has always been synonymous with
POWER!”. This seems to point to the upcoming Redmi 9 series. Recall that it is
the Redmi single-digit series is synonymous with power. The Redmi 8 series
comes with a huge 5000 mAh battery and this is one of the selling points of
this series. According to Kumar Jain, this year, Redmi will offer “Power-packed
phones”, “Powerful processors” and “ Powerful user experience”. This means that
the Redmi 9 will either match the Redmi 8 series 5000 mAh battery or surpass
it.
According to a recent leak, the Redmi 9
will come with an unannounced MediaTek Helio G70. Going by the name of the
silicon wafer, it will be in the same gaming series SoCs like the G90 and G90T.
That means the upcoming Redmi 9 might perform much better than the current
generation Redmi 8 with Qualcomm Snapdragon 439. The report also adds the phone
will come in a 4GB + 64GB storage configuration and could arrive in other
variants as well. Also, it will have a larger footprint than Redmi 8 which
already features a 6.22-inches HD+ dot notch display.
Since the beginning, Xiaomi has always
preferred Qualcomm chips in its phones. However, from time to time, the company
used chipsets from MediaTek like in the very first Redmi Note, Redmi Note 2,
even Redmi Note 3 and 4 in China, and the newest Redmi Note 8 Pro. Even the
entry-level Redmi 6 series from 2018 had MediaTek SoCs inside them.
