After making their respective debuts in India, the
new entry-level Redmi 8 and 8A are now available in their home market of China.
The two entry-level phones mostly differ in the camera and design departments.
The Redmi 8 features the new Aura Wave Glass design
which began with the Redmi K20 while the 8A opts for the plastic Aura Wave Grip
look. The screens are identical 6.22-inch HD+ panels with notches for the 8MP
selfie cam. The similarities continue with the 12nm Snapdragon 439 chipset with
3/4GB RAM and 32/64GB storage alongside microSD expansion.
Around the back, the two devices share the 12MP Sony
IMX363 sensor but the Redmi 8 brings a secondary 2MP depth helper and
fingerprint reader. The battery capacity is 5,000 mAh on both phones with
support for 18W fast charging.
The Redmi 8 is already available and will set buyers
back CNY 799 (US$ 113) for the 3/32GB version while the 4/64GB model will go for
CNY 899 (US$ 127). The Redmi 8A goes on sales tomorrow starting at CNY 699 (US$ 99) for the
3/32GB units and CNY 799 (US$ 113) for the 4/32GB ones. Both phones will be
available through all major online retailers and there is a special CNY 100
(US$ 14) off on launch day.
