According to a report by renowned analyst Ming-Chi
Kuo Apple's 2020 iPhone lineup will be all OLED with two new screen sizes and
be the first to have 5G. Kuo expects that there will be two premium iPhones - a
5.4-inch OLED and a 6.7-inch OLED, both with 5G - and the third will be an
iPhone XR successor with a 6.1-inch OLED that will max out at LTE.
This means Apple will finally address the needs of
the fans who've been clamoring for a smaller premium iPhone - the current
iPhone XS has a 5.8-inch display and weighs nearly 180g. Moving to a 5.4-inch
diagonal would result in a significantly more compact device. On the other hand
the large iPhone will grow from a 6.5-inch OLED to a 6.7-inch one, likely
reaching massive size.
According to Ming-Chi Kuo the two 2020 iPhones with
5G (the 5.4-inch and 6.7-inch models) will use Qualcomm modems as Apple's
in-house 5G modem isn't expected until 2022. The 2020 iPhone 12 and 12 Max will
support both sub-6GHz and mmWave technology.
Meanwhile the 2019 iPhone lineup, which is expected
this fall, will rely on Intel 4G modems, despite Intel's move to exit the modem
business, as that decision came after the deal to provide the next iPhones with
LTE support.
As for Apple's upcoming 2019 iPhone lineup - it's
expected that the iPhone 11 and 11 Max will look almost identical to the XS and
XS Max but will add an ultrawide camera while the iPhone XR successor will
retain its LCD but get a second camera (likely a telephoto unit).
