We talked about a new laptop
manufacturer from China that entered the market with very competitive products.
It is XIDU and will soon release their new product, XIDU PhilBook Max that
surely is very interesting and we are eager to see what the price will be as
the company says it will be very competitive. Apart from the 360° design (also
known as Yoga from the homonymous Lenovo series), the touchscreen is the star
of the show.
Besides the good quality of the panel and the
super-narrow (just 4.9mm thin) bezels, the 14.1″ FHD IPS display is is
multitouch. Using the touchscreen when the laptop is in its classic form can
become tiring but once you rotate the display by 360°, it immediately
transforms into a perfect tablet. Multitouch allows for click, drag, and
generally get rid of the mouse as everything can be done with your fingers. The
tent mode is very useful as well, especially when you want to watch a movie.
The display features a 16:10 aspect ratio and that means more vertical space,
very useful when editing documents or browsing.
But, is all the above enough for someone to choose a
convertible laptop over a traditional one? Of course not, that’s why there’s
more to it:
- Having a full-fledged OS like Windows is a blessing. The transition from laptop to tablet is smooth with the Windows tablet mode and in conjunction with the laptop-grade CPU, multitasking is years ahead of a typical tablet.
- Using it as a tablet adds a new dimension for traditional laptop users. Now it is easier for someone to use the computer single-handedly, even when walking.
- A 2-in-1 convertible laptop lessens your package when traveling, especially for users who already carry a smartphone and are entangled in whether to take both a laptop and a tablet on trips.

Besides the 360° rotating touchscreen, the PhilBook
Max is driven by an Intel CPU at up to 2.5GHz burst frequency and carries 6GB
of RAM together with a 128GB SSD. Also, the backlit keyboard is something found
on much more expensive devices. The device looks promising and convincing but
we’ll have to wait until the official release to learn more about it and its
pricing.
