The China Unicom carrier shared an image of the Vivo
NEX 5G prototype. It was on display at the Qualcomm booth at the Xinhua Agency
media conference. The Vivo NEX already made headlines in 2018 because of its great screen-to-body
ratio and pop-up camera. Now, it is the subject of tests to accommodate future
5G signals.
According to reports, the upcoming Vivo NEX 5G
smartphone is equipped with the latest SoC from Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 855.
The Snapdragon 855 chip comes with the X50 LTE modem to enable 5G connectivity.
Vivo also confirmed that they have completed
software and hardware development geared towards manufacturing of commercial 5G
smartphones with plans of launching pre-commercial terminals in 2019.There are speculations that it
could have up to 10GB of RAM.
Last September, Vivo also stated that they
successfully tested 5G on its NEX smartphone. But, the SoC they used was not
revealed during that time. There are also reports of other big names trying to utilize 5G
connectivity on their future releases such as Huawei, OPPO and Xiaomi. Rumors
have it that these three will also showcase their 5G prototypes at the upcoming
MWC in 2019.
