When Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon Wear 3100
last month, it also confirmed that the first smartwatch to be powered by it
would be the Montblanc Summit 2. At the time, the only thing known about it was
the fact that it had been designed for both men and women. Today, however, this
all changes.
Following in the footsteps of the original, the
Summit 2 boasts a circular 1.2-inch AMOLED display that is protected by
sapphire crystal. Wrapped around this is a new stainless steel casing that
includes a rather large rotating crown on the right side, and two extra buttons
above and below– these can be programmed to launch specific apps. Over on the
rear, a combination of steel, glass, and resin can be found, all of which
encompass a heart rate monitor and magnetic charging connectors. The watch is
42mm wide and 14.3mm thick, while straps are all 22mm.
As mentioned in the opening paragraph, the Wear
OS-powered device comes equipped with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Wear 3100 which,
thanks to its efficiency improvements, allows for a full day of use.
Alternatively, the battery life can be extended to a full week when Time Only
Mode is switched on. Regardless of the display mode chosen, this is all coupled
with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage, double the amounts typically found
inside smartwatches.
Aiming to compete in the luxury segment, a variety
of models including one with a DLC coating and another with a steel finish will
be offered. Also, a variety of different bands will be up for grabs too.
Price-wise, Montblanc's latest offering kicks off at US$ 995, although the
Titanium sports edition costs US$ 1,095. Similarly, different straps will also
push the starting price up. In any case, those interested will be pleased to
know that shipments begin today.
