Car brands and handheld tech have historically not
gone well together (and no, we’re not talking about that ticket you got). We’ve
seen marques like Hummer, Porsche, Ferrari, Mclaren, and Mercedes all release
phones, only to watch them totally (and justifiably) tank. After looking over
the specs on Land Rover’s Explore Phone, however, it’s possible this new rugged
smartphone will be the exception to the rule.
Built in collaboration with Bullitt, a UK-based
smartphone company known for making high-end rugged phones, this smartphone
boasts a ton of great features along with some seriously tough protection and
casing. Rated at IP68, it can withstand drops from nearly 6-feet while
remaining splash, water, and dust resistant.
Designed to go on long, multi-day
trips, the phone comes with a huge 4000mAh battery and a Moto Mod-like add-on
battery pack for when you run low on juice. For taking great photos, the phone
is equipped with a 16 MP rear and 8 MP front camera.
And as far as processing
goes? The phone is more than set with its 4GB or RAM and 64GB of ROM, and
Deca-core 2.6GHz 64 bit MTK Helio x27 chipset. All of this functionality will
help the phone run the integrated adventuring and GPS-powered apps to hep you
find your way in the wilderness. Word is that when this phone goes on sale in
April it’ll retail for around US$ 800.
