Now that both Nintendo and Sega have created their
own retro gaming devices, it looks like the gloves are off in a new console
war. The latest contender to join the fight, SNK, is set to release a
completely standalone desktop arcade called the Neo Geo Mini.
Like the NES Classic and Mega Drive Mini, the Neo
Geo Mini will launch with a host of onboard games – 40, in fact. And, if
history is any indication, you can expect to see classics like Samurai Shodown,
King of Fighters, and (as it appears in the announcement photo) at least one
entry in the renowned Metal Slug series.
This one differs in one major way,
however: it has its own 3.5″ built-in screen, so you don’t have to plug it in
to a TV to play. It will, however, have an HDMI port in case you’d prefer it on
the big screen. There’s no word yet on price, but for hardcore gamers, this is
sure to be one of the best retro releases to date.
