Evan Blass has a very solid track record with leaked
renders, particularly with Samsung devices in the past. Today, @evleaks tweeted
a couple of renders of the newly designed desktop docking station, updated in
time for the release of the Samsung Galaxy S9.
The new dock, supposedly called the “DeX Pad” is
different from its predecessor in a few ways. The round area that the Galaxy S8
was supported in an upright position is no more. The new design will dock the
S9 in a flat position to make it easier to use the phone’s display as a touch
pad. There is also a newly redesigned ventilation port.
The render also shows the ports available on the new
dock: A full size HDMI port, two full size USB ports, and a USB-C port for
power input. What’s missing is the Ethernet port from the original DeX Dock.
Wi-Fi is pretty much a widely available commodity and the omission of the
Ethernet port won’t matter to most people.
This is the first time we've been able to see the
Galaxy S9 from a lower angle in a leak. Here, we see a new kind of slotted
speaker port and the 3.5mm headphone jack. The redesign of the speaker port
could indicate we might finally see stereo loudspeakers on a Samsung flagship
smartphone, which would be a welcome feature - as Samsung’s flagship
loudspeakers sound average at best.
Until the phone is officially announced, we’ll be
keeping you updated on all the leaks leading up to the phone’s launch on
February 25.
