Makers and gamers looking for a new project to keep
them busy this weekend may be interested in this awesome wireless retro game
clock created by Thingiverse member KiwiGrinder. This fantastic remake uses the
OLED World Clock box created by Ken3d to create a interesting clock that will
appeal to those who grew up playing retro games and includes references to
iconic games such as Pong, Pacman and Tetris.
KiwiGrinder has provided full instructions on how to
create your very own over on the official Thingiverse website together with all
the STL files. For the components that you will need to 3D print to create the
minimalist case which houses the ESP-01 board and 0.96″ I2C OLED display.
To create the code for the clock the Real Time Clock
(RTC) lines were removed and replaced with a NTP Client (Network Time Server).
This means it still has all the code to change the date and time. However, no
matter what you change it to, the clock will always obtain the time from the
NTP server.
Once the clerk is connected to your wireless network
it will be able to calculate latitude and longitude and connect to the
WUnderground service. The service will then return your time-zone, taking into
account daylight savings time. The software then contacts a NTP server to get
the current time using the time-zone obtained previously.
