Amazon is not the first company to
launch a pair of digital glasses that are Alexa-enabled. That honor will go to
a company called Vuzix. The company is going to show off its new augmented
reality glasses with the Alexa voice assistant at CES 2018 in Las Vegas next
week. Amazon has confirmed that Vuzix’s device is the first product of its kind
to be Alexa-enabled.
Vuzix is no stranger to smartglasses. The company
has been doing this for years. The new pair is different only because it’s the
first Alexa-enabled pair they have made. It looks like users will be able to
ask Alexa questions just like they can on any other Alexa-enabled device and
the glasses will then show the results on the display. So if the user asks
Alexa for directions, it will display a map on the augmented reality screen,
showing them the way.
Vuzix will release these AR glasses in the second
quarter of this year for about US$ 1000. It will start of expensive, but the
company is hoping to have the price under US$ 500 by 2019. We don’t know if Amazon
will ever launch its own pair of Alexa-enabled smart glasses, but this is a
good start anyway.
