Often when automakers team up with watchmakers for
the requisite special-edition timepiece, the results can be rather outlandish –
bedecked with carbon-fiber trim, big logos, brightly colored components, and
elaborate bracelets.
This one stands out from the rest because
of its subtlety. It's a special version of the new Ingenieur from the
International Watch Company out of Schaffhausen, Switzerland – producers of
some of the finest timepieces on the market. IWC has served as official
timekeeper for Mercedes-AMG since 2004, so for the German performance
automaker's 50th anniversary, it produced this limited-edition chronograph.
The wristwatch is powered by IWC's own 89361 calibre
manufacture movement with flyback chronograph timer, encased in titanium with a
silver-plated dial, tachymeter scale, and anti-magnetic soft-iron cage visible
through the sapphire caseback and made to resemble an AMG brake disc.
No oversized logos to announce its distinction, just
the engraving “Tribute to One Man, One Engine,” in reference to the
craftsmanship that goes into constructing each AMG powertrain. Only 250
examples will be made, and we dare not ask how much each will cost, because
Schaffausen's finest typically retail for anywhere between US$ 7,000 and over Us$ 100,000. Five of those were included with each of the special-edition GT3
racers that AMG unveiled at the Nürburgring late last month.
