Microsoft today at its educational event introduced
Windows 10 S operating system, a version of Windows 10 Pro that for education.
Microsoft says that the OS has been streamlined for security and performance
and the applications are delivered only via the Windows Store ensuring
Microsoft-verified security and integrity.
Microsoft Edge is the default browser, which you
can’t change. Additionally, the default search provider in Microsoft Edge and
Internet Explorer cannot be changed. The
company says that this is because Edge is more secure than Chrome or Firefox.
Windows Defender and all security features of Windows 10 are included.
Microsoft says that Windows 10 S was inspired by students and teachers and it
is the best Windows ever for schools.
Many hardware peripherals (such as printers) that
work with Windows 10 today will work with Windows 10 S, but may have limited
functionality, says Microsoft. “You can switch to Windows 10 Pro easily at any
time through the Windows Store for an affordable price; payment is collected
through the Windows Store, said the company. It costs $50 to upgrade to Windows
10 Pro.
Microsoft has partnered with Acer, ASUS, Dell,
Fujitsu, HP, Samsung, and Toshiba for a range of new Windows 10 S PCs for Education
that includes HP Probook x360 11 G1 EE, Dell Latitude 11 3000 Series 3189
2-in-1, ASUS Vivobook W202, Acer Travel Mate Spin B1, Asus VivoBook Flip TP203,
Asus VivoBook E201, Samsung Notebook M, Toshiba Altair ME+, Dell Latitude 3180,
FUJITSU LIFEBOOK P727 and Toshiba Altair-R. Some of these were already released
with Windows 10 Home or Pro.
These Windows 10 S touch PCs will be available
starting at US$ 189 in the coming months. Microsoft said that compatible apps and
devices will continue to grow over time.
