Oukitel has just announced a brand-new,
bargain-priced midranger — the U16 Max. The phone will be up for pre-sale on
AliExpress with the humble, promotional price-tag of US$ 109.99 (full price said
to be US$ 148.64) and shipments will begin on the 28th of March.
It's a beautifully-crafted, full-metal phone that
sports a 6-inch display on its front. Naturally, that translates into a rather
sizable and hefty device — the Oukitel U16 Max measures at 165.5 x 83.3 x 9.15 mm and weighs 222 g. To provide a bit of
ergonomics, the frame's edges are chamfered and the device's back is slightly
arched.
The screen's resolution is 720 x 1280 pixels, which
translates to 245 pixels per inch when stretched across the massive, 6-inch
diagonal. Under the hood, we have an octa-core MediaTek MT6753 SoC, which can
tick with a clock speed of up to 1.5 GHz, coupled with a generous 3 GB of RAM
chip. Onboard storage is 32 GB, expandable via microSD card of up to another 32
GB.
In the camera department, we have a 13 MP sensor for
the main snapper, with its individual pixels sized at 1.1 µm, and a lens
aperture of F2.0. On the front, we have a 5 MP selfie camera, with a slightly
smaller F2.2 aperture. The U16 Max checks this box as well. In the trunk, we have a
4,000 mAh juicer, which should keep the lights on for quite a while. It also
supports quick charge for faster top-ups.
Oukitel's UI for this phone is a light re-skin of
Android 7 Nougat. The icons all have their own, unique look, and a couple of
minor features like gesture unlocks, fingerprint-assigned apps, and screen
record have been added to improve user experience. Nougat's brand-new split
screen is definitely welcome on the large, 6-inch screen. Speaking of which —
there's also a one-hand mode, which shrinks the screen to make it easier to use
with a single thumb.
We've got 4G LTE coverage for band 1, band 3, band
7, band 8, and band 20. 3G connectivity is available through 900 MHz and 2100
MHz. If you are planning to jump on this bargain, you might want to make sure
your mobile provider covers at least some of these.
