Vivo Xplay 5 Ultimate Edition
Just as we’re getting used to 4 GB of RAM
in our handsets, here comes the first smartphone with a whopping 6 GB of RAM—the
Vivo Xplay 5 Ultimate Edition.
That phone, which set a record for being the industry’s first to come with 4 GB
of RAM, was just an average device by 2015’s standards. The Vivo Xplay 5
Ultimate Edition, on the other hand, is a premium smartphone (at least on
paper). Its metal unibody design, fingerprint scanner, and internal specs seem
to suggest that the Xplay 5 can go toe-to-toe with the likes of the Samsung
Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge.
Speaking of Samsung, the company has
reportedly sold its curved display technology to other smartphone makers. That
explains why the Xplay 5 Ultimate Edition has the same dual-edge display as the
Galaxy S7 Edge. Huawei and Xiaomi also seem to be working on new products using
such display tech.
The official price of the Vivo Xplay 5
Ultimate Edition is CNY 4288, with the official release
date scheduled on March 8. A standard edition (4 GB of RAM) will sell for CNY
3698. At such prices, one might say the Xplay 5 is a cheaper
version of the S7 Edge. Then again, only real-world usage will tell us if this
Vivo product can really deliver.
